Memorial Day is more than going to a parade and having a BBQ or picnic!  It is a day of remembrance of those who have died serving our country.
  
~Since the late 1950′s on the Thursday just before the Memorial day, around 1200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place small American flags at each of the more than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington National Cemetery. Bike Helmets Are A Must!


With the weather breaking and summer upon us, there is no better time for a bike ride! But before you let your little ones hop on, make sure their top is properly guarded for safety.

Homemade Summer Sidewalk Chalk


Nothing screams outside fun like SIDEWALK CHALK!  Our little Rembrandts go through BUCKETS FULL each summer.  Here's a fun activity to do as a family that helps keep your CHALK supply plentiful!  It's cheap, easy to make and a great science project!   The sidewalk is their blank canvas--let them create! 


What you will need:

•    Toilet paper or paper towel tubes(cut paper towel tubes in 1/2)

•    Scissors

•    Duct tape

•    Wax paper

•    Small bucket or disposable container to make the recipe

•    ¾ cup of warm water

•    1 ½ cups Plaster ...

Fish for Free Days are the perfect opportunity to introduce a friend or relative to the lifelong sport of fishing. There’s no better way to enjoy Pennsylvania’s great outdoors than a day of fishing with the entire family.
This year they are having a "Fish for Millions" contest where you may catch a marked fish worth big bucks!  Contest is from May 5-July 8th!

Who: Fish for Free Days allow anyone (resident or non-resident) to legally fish for Pennsylvania’s most popular fish without a fishing license.

Rides, games and funnel cake are staples of any community Jubilee and this one won't disappoint!

Monday, May 28 - 4th Annual Sandyvale Memorial Day Ceremony and Johnstown Community Event

Sponsored by the Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy, traditional observances of Memorial day will blend with fun activities like hot air balloon rides, food, music and military displays.  Eight trees will be dedicated to various wars, an angel sculpture will be dedicated at the garden.  The Pa. Army National Guard 28th Infantry Division Band, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, the 2nd Brigade Special Troops and other military personel will participate.

Sunday, May 27 - Roxbury Bandshell Summer Concert Series Kick Off-Civil War Living History Re-enactment

The 54th PA Volunteer Infantry and Civilian re-enactors will be at the Bandshell to perform a Civil War Living History. Throughout the day and in-between concerts soldiers and civilian re-enactors will be camped at an authentic campsite in front of the Bandshell. Soldiers will be re-enacting drills and performing live fire demonstrations. Kids and adults are welcome to come and experience what the Civil War was really like.

A collection spanning 20 years and 500 hats will be on display for this unique fashion show and boutique.  Hat Ladies Marsha McDowell and Pat Holifield are working with All About Us to raise awareness of Afrucan American artists.  Monies raised will fund a scholarship named for the ladies' mothers which will help low income families participate in cultural events.  There will be live entertainment and shopping opportunities!

The 2012 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community Johnstown will benefit 18 local health and human service organizations.
Where: Central Park in downtown Johnstown
When: Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K Walk begins at 9 a.m. The One-Mile Fun Walk begins at 9:15 a.m.

Saturday, June 2 - Neighborhood Clean-Up Day-Morrellville

The Alternative Community Resource Program, Lift Johnstown and the  Community Growth Project has six cleanup days scheduled in many Johnstown communities.  ACRP?staff said they need volunteers so it's a great time to pitch in and rejuvenate your neighborhood!
Where: Meet at Grace Lutheran Church.
When: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Who: open to the public but great for scout groups and organizations to pool their skills!
How: No reservations required, but you may want to contact the group for a spot on which to concentrate and call your groups own!  Bring tools to work outside...brooms, rakes, leaf blowers, garbage bags, gloves, pruners, shovels...anything you can think of.  Many hands make light work!
Cost: free!

Sunday, June 3 - 2nd Annual 5-Goal Iron Man Tournament

The 5-Goal Iron Man Tournament is an adult roller hockey tournament which benefits the Make A Wish Foundation.  There will be prize drawings throughout the day, a Sidney Crosby jersey will be auctioned off and all proceeds will go to MAW.  There will also be a refreshment booth with all proceeds from the booth going to Heather’s Haven, a former Make-A-Wish child that won the hearts of many local folks over with her stories of surviving the pains and suffering of battling Ewings Sarcoma.
Where: The Southmont Basketball Courts, Southmont
When: 9:00 AM (continues throughout the day)
Who: open to the public.  Players must be 18 or older
How: registration necessary for players. Spectators welcome!!!
Cost: Cost to enter is $40 per player for the day.  No admission for spectators, but there will be food and raffle opportunities!

Sunday, June 3 - Valewood Farm's Summertime Jubilee!!

Family Fun on the farm!  "From Moo to You" hayrides, Giant corn box, farm photo ops, games, prizes, milking contest, cow patty bingo, classic cars, antique tractors, live music, great food!

Sunday, June 3 - Drum Circle at the Bottleworks!

Looking for something new and fun to do this year?  The BOTTLE WORKS Drum Circle is a monthly interactive rhythmic experience that gathers in unity, friendship and celebration of international music traditions. Experience is not necessary, just a willingness to have fun, expand your horizons and express yourself. Led by experienced drummer Rachel Allen, and open to ALL ages, young and old, the group meets the first Sunday of every month.  The length of the session depends on the attendees and what mood they're in!!!

Tuesday, June 5 - Yoga and Me

Instructor Kristen Rovan Panek will lead parents and children in simple, fun yoga poses to promote focus, coordination, self-esteem and relaxation. Students will "play" yoga by imitating animals and nature, in a fun and caring environment. Kristen Panek is a certified Level I yoga instructor through the YogaFit program, and has been teaching yoga to children and families in Johnstown for four years.

Wednesday, June 6 through Saturday, June 9 - The Seventh Annual Johnstown Film Festival

This festival is a wonderful competition of short films ranging from comedies to serious documentaries.  
Where: Wednesday through Friday at the Johnstown Flood Museum;  The best short films are shown Saturday evening at Peoples Natural Gas Park.

Who: Open to the public!!  Saturday would make a great date night for Mom and Dad!
How: tickets available at the door
Cost: $5 for each of the first 3 nights.  Tickets for the last night of the festival are $8 for JAHA members $10 for nonmembers and can be purchased online at www.johnstownfilmfest.org.
