The Johnstown V-Day Movement

By Press Release February 11, 2016
Johnstown, PA:  The Johnstown V-Day Movement is here…V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through events and activities designed to engage the community in thoughtful discussion. The Johnstown V-Day Movement is here to stay…until the violence STOPS!  Those of us in the community that work with women and girls understand the need to speak out about violence that females and males are experiencing in our community and around the world.  Join us as we LISTEN! ACT! and RISE! to Demand Revolutionary Change for Women and Girl Survivors of Violence.

So, it is with great pleasure that The Community Connection Team, comprised of various local social service agencies and individuals, announces this years’ V-Day Johnstown schedule of events.

Half the Sky Screenings: Turning Oppression into Opportunity Worldwide. An old Chinese proverb says “Women hold up half the sky.” Then why do women in Africa and Asia persistently suffer human rights abuses? In this compelling documentary focusing on humanitarian issues, journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn take us to Africa and Asia, where many women live in profoundly dire circumstances.  Friday, March 11th @  Ebensburg Municipal Building Community Room: Doors open at 6:00 pm screening begins at 6:30 pm.  Tuesday, March 15th @ University of Pittsburg at Johnstown, Blackington Hall, Room 131: Doors open at 6:30pm screening begins at 7:00 pm.

Proceeds benefit the YogaSong Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Program with Bottle Works, Victim Services Inc. and the Women’s Help Center, Inc.  The philosophy behind this program draws from research piloted by Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk and the Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute showing the efficacy of Trauma-Sensitive Yoga in shifting the neurobiology of the traumatized brain.  Locally, this program has brought survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence a truly transformational and healing experience lead to fewer trauma symptoms, increased selfesteem, and an increased ability to tolerate strong emotions.
