Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oatmeal Cup Review

2016 was the year I was finally going to really, really, really, try to eat well, exercise and get on track with my health and that of my family (by feeding them good things and encouraging them to do it with me.).

Well, it's harder than it seems. I just read a book about habits and why you do the things you do and so much of what we do is ingrained. We go to what we have always done when things are stressful or rushed. The book suggests that in order to successfully change or adopt a new habit, you have to wrap it in something familiar so that it doesn't seem like such a huge difference from what you have already done in the past. You're more likely to be successful in keeping it that way.

So what does all of this have to do with Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups you ask?

Another school year is about to begin. After your kids enjoyed a summer of sleeping in, eating when they wanted to and lazy days complaining about being bored (though not if you checked our Macaroni Kid calendar!), that first few weeks of school could come as a pretty big shock to the system! Some kids just aren't breakfast eaters (mine included) so getting them to eat SOMETHING that will pack the biggest bang for the bite first thing in the morning was always the bane of my existence.

Enter Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups. My kid always liked oatmeal but I have to admit that I was not a good mom. I did not stay up making overnight oatmeal, or oatmeal in a crockpot. I got the little packets, dumped them in a bowl, poured on some milk, threw it in the microwave, tossed it on the table and when said kid came flying around the corner to be on the way to school, watched as he took a bite or two, before heading out the door to school.

Enter wrapping the new habit in the old (I guess we're making a sheep in wolf's clothing here!). We like oatmeal. Check. We like quick and microwavable. Check. Bob's Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups are microwavable and ready in 3 minutes-one in the micro and 2 to set up. So far so good. What's different from that old packet of oatmeal? Bob's Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups are made with a blend of gluten free quick rolled and old fashioned oats, stone ground Scottish oatmeal, wholesome flaxseeds and nourishing chia seeds (and if you read our newsletter, you know how much we love chia seeds because they are a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids). The directions suggest that you add water but we add either regular milk or almond milk, but being able to add water makes it an awesome choice to pack for lunch or a snack anywhere there is a microwave. Did I mention that it comes in it's own microwavable, disposable paper cup? Great for travel and if you're like my kid, decide that it tastes so rich and delicious that a few bites just isn't enough so you want to finish it on the go. It's hearty enough to keep hunger at bay and we all know that it's hard to think much less absorb anything if you are hungry. A great breakfast is so important to growing minds and bodies.

I'm all about making change and improvement as painless as possible and old habits die hard in my house, but I think this one has a shot! We all really love this stuff. For real. I've even made space in my cabinet just for it.

We're going to be sampling Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Oatmeal Cups at our annual Back to School event on Friday at the Johnstown Art Spot and I'm sure they will like it too!
