Make Your Own Bubbles!

With simple ingredients you probably have in your kitchen

By Julie Follansbee July 24, 2014
Bubbles are synomous with summer! So we decided to try out some of the many bubble recipes on Pinterest.

Here are our top 3:

RECIPE #1

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp Dawn dish liquid
  • 1 tbsp glycerine

RECIPE #2

  • 10 cups water
  • 4 cups Dawn dish liquid
  • 1 cup corn syrup

RECIPE #3

  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups Dawn dish liquid
  • 2 pkgs plain gelatin

For all 3 recipes, gently mix ingredients together. Try not to whip.

After you have made your bubble mixture, let it sit 24 hours. The longer the mixture ages, the stronger the bubbles become. (A great lesson in patience for kids and an opportunity for a comparison experiment. Have them try the bubble mixture right away and then the next day to see if there is any difference.)

Bubbles wouldn't be complete without bubble wands or blowers!

We used pipe cleaners, plastic coated wire hangers, straws, straws strung through twine and our very favorite, plastic drink bottles with the bottoms cut off. You can dip the cut end in the bubble mixture as is to blow giant bubbles or for "snake" bubbles, put a piece of wash cloth fastened with a rubber band around the bottom. Dip the bottom of the bottle into the bubble mixture and blow! For more fun, add a few drops of food coloring and have colored bubbles!

Some variations we tried that were very popular on Pinterest: glow in the dark bubbles with glow sticks and glow in the dark bubbles with glow in the dark paint.

We added 2 TBSP of Martha Stewart's Glow in the Dark paint to mixture #2. Though the mixture glowed in the dark in the jar, the bubbles didn't glow in the dark when blown.

The other method of breaking and cutting open glow sticks wasn't easy to do and the fluid inside the glow sticks made me uncomfortable. It took a lot of glow sticks to even get the basic bubble mixture to turn colors and didn't really work either.

We'd love to hear what you've tried and what your favorite recipes are. If you try the glow in the dark variety and it works for you, please share your results with us!
