Sponge Painting for Kids

Quick and easy way to make original works of art!

By Linda Rice January 17, 2013

Since I homeschool my son, I'm always trying to find different art projects for him to work on. Sponge painting is something that he always seems to like doing, so I try to incorporate that into his lessons at least once a season. We just completed this snowman picture, but this can be done at any time of the year, using simple concepts, like flowers, butterflies, leaves...just about anything!

You will need:

  • Tempera paints in containers large enough to handle the sponges (I recycle plastic fruit cup bowls for this type of project)
  • Pieces of natural sea sponges - found at most hobby stores
  • Construction paper

Depending on the age of the child, you can either give them a theme to paint and then let their imaginations go wild, or for a smaller child, you can do a basic sketch in pencil and then let them fill it in with paint using the different sides of the sponges. There really isn't a right or wrong way to do this...just let their creative juices flow!
