I grew up reading Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. An orphaned brother and sister save their money to buy a mare and her foal named Misty. I knew as sure as the sun came up every day that some day my parents would take me to Assateague Island and weā€™d bring home Misty. Ā I was that smitten. Well, the closest I came was a cat named Misty and a horse for my Barbie.

What is it with little girls and ponies? There is some kind of magic!

The magic gets an update with the new Dreamworks series ā€œSpirit Riding Freeā€ that premiers on Netflix May 5. Itā€™s the story of Lucky, a young girl who has just lost her mother and is traveling with her railroader father and well meaning aunt to start a new life in the frontier town of Miradero. On the train, she catches a glimpse of Spirit, a strong willed wild mustang who refuses to be broken.

Having left behind everything she knows, Lucky finds herself in the unfamiliar position of being the new girl in town. Making friends isnā€™t as easy as she thinks it should be. Her school mates judge her to be a city girl and she finds herself alone...until she meets up again with Spirit penned in a coral with Boomerang and Chica Linda, horses that belong to classmates Pru and Abigail. Slowly the stubborn yet proficient horsewoman Pru and the optimistic Abigail get to know Lucky. These characters and situations are easy to relate to. Who hasnā€™t made a bad first impression or misjudged someone on sight?

The executive producer of this new gem is Aury Wallington who you may remember from ā€œSex in the Cityā€, ā€œHeroesā€, and ā€œVeronica Marsā€ so you know the characters will be strong and believable.

West Hills Brownie Troop 46321 joined us at the Ridge in Upper Yoder to preview 2 never before seen episodes of ā€œSpirit Riding Freeā€ before they premier on May 5th to the general public. The girls sat transfixed as they watched the adventures of 12 year old Lucky, her friends and the independent Spirit, laughing, gasping at the suspense and very involved in the story.
