Let Halloween Candy Take You Into Thanksgiving

Ideas for what to do with all that candy.

By Julie Follansbee Editor and Publisher of Macaroni Kid Johnstown/Laurel Highlands/Altoona November 2, 2017

It's over. The annual haul. Candy. Everywhere.

My child was very moderate in his candy consumption. Me, on the other hand? I have to disguise it so that I can't see it.

You can freeze your candy and use for ice cream toppings and baking add ins. You can mix up a batch of trail mix with what you got.

This year I wanted to get a little more creative so here are some ideas to help everyone deal with the excess and decorate for the next season to boot.

COUNTDOWN TO THANKSGIVING

SUPPLIES

Candy

Cups (However many you need to get to Thanksgiving. Make sure that your candy fits inside the cups)

Glue

Crepe paper or tissue paper in fall colors

Glue

Marking pen or number stickers

Small pieces of foam for turkey

HOW TO:

This is super simple. Put your candy in the cup. Cut your paper in a square shape to cover the cup.Glue around the rim of the cup and adhere the paper. Wit to dry and carefully write numbers on with a marker or use stickers. You can make Thanksgiving Day into a turkey by adding a foam face, hat, tail and wattle using popsicle sticks, crepe paper or foam. Use what you have to make what you need  is my motto.

I displayed them as a centerpiece on a cake stand.

Each day, "break in" to the cup by puncturing the tissue and savor the treat.

MAKE A THANKFUL TREE

SUPPLIES:

Candy

Tissue paper, napkins or colored paper

Fishing line, piper cleaners, ribbon or string

A sturdy branch with or without leaves

Container, vase, or your old pumpkin from Halloween

HOW TO:

Place your branch in a sturdy container or vase remembering that there will be some weight on it so make sure it's secure.

Cut the paper into squares. I used cocktail napkins in fall colors.

Wrap your candy and twist ends.

Put a piece of fishing line, string, ribbon or yarn on one end.

Hang from branch.

Each time someone takes a candy have them replace it with a tag on which they've written something for which they are thankful.
