(JOHNSTOWN, PA.) – The Cambria County Library has become a registered Safe Sitter® Teaching Site, offering the nationally-recognized life and safety training program for young teens. Students will learn how to prevent injuries and handle emergencies when home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. The program, developed by pediatrician Dr. Patricia Keener, follows American Heart Association standards for rescue skills and instruction in first aid techniques from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The library is currently registering students in grades 6-8 for a 1-day, Safe Sitter Essentials class that will teach infant and child choking rescue, how to prevent problem behavior, and how to run a babysitting business. The class will be offered on three different dates so that participants can choose a class that is convenient. The first class will be held Saturday, July 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A weekday class will be held Thursday, July 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The third option will be held over two weeknights--Tuesday, August 3 from 5 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, August 4 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Preregistration is required to attend this 1-day class. Visit cclsys.org/event to complete the sign-up form and select a class. Students attending the daytime classes should bring a bagged lunch. For questions about the Safe Sitter training program, contact Cambria County Library’s Children’s Department at (814) 536-5131 ext. 205.

Class tuition and materials for the Safe Sitter Essentials classes have been generously funded by a Fund for the Future Grant from the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies.
