Only in this part of the country can we have rain, sunshine, and yes snow...all in one day...in May!
Well, I think Mother Nature got all that out of her system and as I look out of my window and enjoy the sunshine, I look forward to spring and summer in the Laurel Highlands!
Our calendar is really full this month with lots of outdoors activities!

Getting Ready for Spring/Summer Outdoor Fun
It's been a long winter for some of us in northern climates, but it looks like it's finally spring and time to get ready for outdoor activities.
Here’s part of my spring to-do list to help you get ready for kid-friendly outings.
Kid’s Clothes
- Check “spring” jackets and rain coats to see if they fit.
- Check out last year’s rain boots and try them on.
- Locate ball caps and sun hats.

Local Cribs for Kids program Continues to Grow
In 2008, the Cambria County State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP) made the safety of babies and young children a priority. “Losing even one baby to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is one too many,” says Joanne Weaver from the Cambria County Coroner’s office. Initial funding came from a grant written by Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center (MMC). Since then local businesses and individuals have donated to the cause as well. Every penny donated goes towards the purchase of a pack and play crib.

SURVEY SAYS STUDENTS WAITING LONGER TO TRY DRUGS

Over the past decade, experimentation and regular use of cigarettes and alcohol among young people in Cambria County has declined, and children are waiting longer to try drugs and alcohol. The average onset of experimentation with alcohol is now age 13 and a year later, at 14, for marijuana, according to a comparison of data from the 2001 through 2011 Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS). Upward Bound Program Accepting Student Application
The Saint Francis University Upward Bound Program is accepting applications from college bound 8th, 9th, and 10th grade students attending public schools throughout Cambria County. Upward Bound is designed to help students prepare for and pursue a college degree following high school graduation.
A federal TRIO Program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Upward Bound has prepared over 2,500 qualifying students for the challenges of college. Continuously funded since 1966, Saint Francis’ Upward Bound Program is one of the oldest Upward Bounds in the U.S.

Saturday, May 18 - Johnstown Flood 124th Anniversary Bus Tour
This bus/walking tour will follow the path of the floodwaters, taking you to all the major flood sites. Costumed interpreters will share stories of the flood, telling of those who perished, survived, and those who helped rebuild.
On the Tour you'll visit:
The South Fork Fishing & Hunting Clubhouse, the breast of the South Fork Dam, historic sites around Central Park and downtown Johnstown, the Grand Army of the Republic building, the Johnstown Flood Museum, Grandview Cemetery.

Paddle 10 miles for charity down the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River from Tatesville to Hopewell, Pennsylvania! Saturday, May 18 through Sunday, May 19 - The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Steam Excursions
The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society plans to run steam excursions from Lewistown through Altoona, over the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and back again. The weekend before, the society plans to run two or three trips each . In between the two weekends, if a society track inspector gives the OK, the society will house the 765 – under steam – in the Altoona museum’s new quarter-roundhouse. The Excursion manager, Wayne York, was quoted as saying – “It will probably be the most significant railroad excursion this year anywhere in the U.S.” In addition, food and refreshments will be available. Join us in May to watch a historic, rare steam locomotive trip through Gallitzin!
Where: From Lewistown through Altoona, over the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and back again on May 25, 26, & 27, with a two-plus hour layover at the Railroaders Memorial Museum on each return trip. Celebrate the sport and art of marbles with Marble Mania. With more than three dozen national marble champions from Allegheny County over the past 70 years, Western Pennsylvania has an extensive marbles history. Play marble-themed games and join national champions from the 1940s through 2012 for a marbles tournament and insider tips. Watch marble-making demonstrations by glass artist Michael Mangiafico throughout the day. Get books signed by noted glass expert and author Dean Six, who will be identifying marbles brought in by visitors. Our Meet the Birds of Prey shows are one of our most popular Meet the Creek programs. From April through November, visit the Shaver’s Creek Raptor Center between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday for an up-close introduction to some of our birds of prey. Volunteers will bring some of our hawks, eagles, and owls out of their cages and answer your questions about these fascinating creatures.

The 54th PA Volunteer Infantry and Civilian re-enactors will be at the Bandshell to perform a Civil War Living History. Wednesday, May 29 - Service Academy Day in Johnstown
Congressman Keith Rothfus [PA-12] invites high school students, parents, teachers, and guidance counselors to Service Academy Day. The event will feature representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Naval Academy. They will be available to provide information and answer questions about attending these institutions. Congressman Rothfus and members of his staff will be available to answer questions about the nomination process. All of the service academies, with the exception of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, require applicants to be nominated by a Member of Congress or other authorized nominating source.

Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2 - "White Oak Basket Making" at the Somerset Historical Society
This workshop will teach the entire process of making a split white oak basket. Students will learn how to harvest white oak logs, splitting, making thin splints, and weaving a white oak basket. Class will be taught by Bill Hill using techniques handed down through his family of basketmakers.

Friday, May 31 - 1889 Flood Commemoration
JAHA will open the first floor of the Johnstown Flood Museum (free) and Peoples Natural Gas Park from 7:00-9:00 pm. Docents will give informal tours of the park facility, and explain the events of the flood in this area, and the Academy Award-winning documentary The Johnstown Flood will be shown under the Polacek Pavilion at 7:15 and 8:00. Also, the Stone Bridge will be lighted from 8:30-11:30 pm with a special show that evokes the events of the Johnstown Flood.
