Andrea, one of our subscriber Mom's, e-mailed me with a great suggestion for an activity in the Johnstown area. The mother of 2 small, very active boys, she recently discovered Greenhouse Park, in the Tire Hill section of Johnstown. There are 11 acres to explore in Greenhouse Park! Great for little guys always on the hunt for adventure! What's great about Greenhouse Park too is that there are pavillions available so you can get out of the sun and enjoy your picnic lunch. Of course, you might want to reserve one for larger groups and the availabilty depends on whether or not they have already been reserved.
Greenhouse Park is also adjacent to Whitewater Park...a 300 acre water park within the banks of the Stoneycreek River..right here in Johnstown!! The water fun includes rafting, swimming, and kayaking and is open April through October. It's free to swim in the river...safety regulations are posted. Just bring your own innertubes and rafts!
Mike Quinn, of the Stoneycreek Quemahoning Initiative (Hollsopple, PA 15935 814-479-7162) cautions parents that although there is no fee to swim and partake of the wonderful water, there are no lifeguards on duty and Conemaugh Township requires that all kids wear a life vest when playing in the water!!!
He also shared that every Tuesday evening around 6:00 PM, there are kayak lessons for those who'd like to take up the sport and that the Conemaugh Township Recreation Commission recently raised $30,000 and is planning to install new playground equipment at Greenhouse Park within the next month. This will truly become a fantastic destination for families!

It's great to know that there is another option to cool off so close to home (and free!)as we enter the dog days of summer!
Thanks Andrea!!
