Disney's The BFG Craft and Screening Party

Sponsored Content and Something to do this long weekend

By Julie Follansbee Editor and Publisher Macaroni Kid Johnstown/Laurel Highlands/Altoona November 24, 2016
One of my most treasured memories of being a mom is cuddling up with my child in a cozy spot and reading aloud. We would get lost in the epic adventures of books.  Roald Dahl was a favorite author who would transport us to new lands. The BFG, or Big Friendly Giant was an absolute treat. I mean, who wouldn't be bewitched by a 24 foot giant who refuses to eat "human beans", snacks on "snozzcumbers" and drinks an elixir called "Frobscottle" that prompts him (and the Queen!) to "whizzpop".

Disney's incarnation of Dahl's "The BFG" is about to be released on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD (Disney Anywhere) on November 29, so we brushed up on our "Gobblefunk" (you can too, here) and had a party to watch the prerelease of the movie and make our own dream jars!

Rated PG and rich with scenery and adventure, it's the perfect family movie for the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  I wanted to share with you some of the fun ways we transformed Molli's birthday party (thanks Molli!) into the land of Roald Dahl and the BFG.

Snacks 400.jpg

Since it is about a giant, the food needed to be tiny, so we got mini crackers and topped them with string cheese that we sliced crosswise, mini vanilla wafers that we topped with the letters "BFG" and itty bitty animal cookies. Sour Patch Kids became our "Human Beans". Tiny food made US look like giants too. We cut the broccoli into the smallest florets and they were dwarfed by our giant fingers. Of course the BFG blows dreams to people with his special trumpet so we got party horns.

We had the first snow fall the day of our party which lent itself beautifully to the mood of the movie. We jumped on that and decorated with lots of white lights. The dimness of the day and the singular white lights made us feel that we were in the BFG's cozy cave.

This is one party theme that can inspire lots of imagination! Here are a few ideas from ours to get you started.

Dream jar Collage 300.jpg

DREAM JARS

What you need:
Glass or plastic jars
Spray or paint on Glow in the Dark paint
Glitter (optional)
Glitter glue sticks in a variety of colors
Glue (more than you thing you need!)
Trinkets to decorate jars inside and out
Glow bracelets (optional)
Battery operated Micro LED lights (optional but my favorite)
Sparkly pony beads
Beige cardstock
Lighter

What you do:
Paint the inside of the jars with glow in the dark paint and let dry completely. (If using spray paint, an adult may want to do this part. Make sure you are in a well ventilated area).
Cut the card stock into pieces about 3" by 5". It will get smaller when you singe it.
Adults, use the lighter to singe the edges to give the paper an aged look.
Have the kids decorate the jars.
Our kids glued the trinkets on the outside and glued the beads on the inside.
Have kids write their dreams on the card stock labels and glue onto the jar.
You can put a glow stick inside the jar.
*I like the micro LED lights because they can be used as a night light and the cord in thin enough to go through
the lid so you can switch it off without opening the jar.

Frobscottle 300.jpg

Frobscottle Recipe
Ginger ale
Green food coloring
Vanilla ice cream
Pop rocks

Pour ginger ale into a clear pitcher (you want to see the bubbles-ours will go up not down like the BFG's).
Add a few drops of food coloring and stir.
Put a scoop of ice cream in a clear cup and top with the green ginger ale.
Top with Pop rocks and enjoy the Whizzpopping!

Ear Collage 300.jpg

GIANT'S EARS

What you need:
Felt
Headbands
Glue Gun and Sticks (we tried fabric glue and it took forever to set up so for instant gratification, glue gun it is).
Template (see link below)

We used the idea for the ears from Kristy Robertson of hobbycraft.

What you do
Cut 2 of each ear on the fold of the felt using the template.
Wrap each ear around the headband (near the bottom of each side-where the ears would be).
Glue to the headband and the fabric with the hot glue.
Some of our kids glittered them a little bit but you can leave plain.
