The Central PA FUN (Food: Understanding Nutrition) Initiative was launched today by the District Library Centers of Altoona and Johnstown. This project focuses on improving health literacy around food and nutrition in six counties in Central Pennsylvania and serves the residents of Indiana, Cambria, Somerset, Blair, Bedford and Huntingdon Counties.
This initiative has two main areas of focus: improving access to quality cooking, nutrition information, and resources and increasing family nutrition literacy. To that end, the library district centers of Altoona and Johnstown will be offering a virtual cookbook club. Free materials will be provided, subject to availability, and three nationally known best-selling authors will be holding live zoom talks on their latest books.
The authors are Bryant Terry, author of Vegetable Kingdom: The Abundant World of Vegan Recipes; Nik Sharma, author of The Flavor Equation; and Reshma Shaw, MD, author of Nourish.
The first 30 people to register will get a copy of all three books. Registration is now open at www.altoonalibrary.org/centralpafun.
In an effort to improve the public’s access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health, the District Library Centers are providing online resources like Medline Plus, Network of the National Library of Medicine, All of Us Research Program and A to Z Food America Cookbook, the world's largest database of American food, culture, and recipes.
All components of this program are accessible with or without an internet connection. For more information, please call (814) 343-0473 or email info@altoonalibrary.org.
